Most memorable/fondest memory of Univ? The cameraderie of college life , in academic life, in sports ,in the beer cellar or even quiet study times in the stack.
Awkward moments at Univ? Being elected "Holder of King Alfred's Balls."
The most important thing I learnt? How to think , but I am still learning. I hope to get it right eventually.
Most important thing you wish you had learnt at Oxford? I wish I had learnt to take advantage of a greater range of opportunities on offer at Oxford. Why did I not manage to find a suitable 4-year course ,instead of 3-year course ?
Percent satisfaction with Oxford? 75%
Proudest achievement of my career? Leading significant growth of GKN's growth in North America and in Asia.
Lowest point in my life? I have been blessed that there have been some "down times" in my life, but nothing that I would call a real low point. I always wonder what is around the corner.
Adjective that best describes career? Fulfilling.
% of potential achieved? It depends......
Most significant unfulfilled ambition? To become an accomplished golfer. I keep working at it, but the goal seems to be further off each year.
Level of optimism about medium-term future of the world? Low. I wonder what kind of world will our children and grand-children live in. As a US resident (and dual national) I am dismayed by the wilful failure of our political leaders and systems to recognise and address the most important issues of our times. I see no leadership emerging that will break the current paradigm.
Professional Life: After Univ I joined Turner and Newall and then moved to GKN in 1971. In 1973 I took a 2-year assignment to open up a business development office in Michigan. At the time GKN had no measurable business activity in North America. As manufacturing industry collapsed in the 70's and 80's in the UK, GKN's technology position in automotive driveline for front wheel drive was the basis for significant expansion in North America , where I became CEO.I moved to Singapore to run GKN's operations in Asia for 5 years ,returning to the US in 2002 to run all the operations in the Americas. I did a 1-year post graduate program in Business Studies at Birmingham ,as well as attending the Harvard Business School AMP program. Having retired in 2006,I now work prt time with a number of CEO's as a mentor and coach .
Personal Life: Jill and I met in the UK and have now been married for 40 years. We have two sons, both Princeton graduates. One is an attorney in Washington DC and the other an equity analyst for a boutique New York investment bank.
