Most memorable/fondest memory of Univ? A couple of tries in the 1963-64 rugby season.
Awkward moments at Univ? Being sconsed for inaccurate reading of grace before dinner in hall, after celebrating one of the above in the beer cellar.
The most important thing I learnt? How long it takes to grow up.
Most important thing you wish you had learnt at Oxford? How to deal with the opposite sex more competently.
Percent satisfaction with Oxford? 75+ %
Proudest achievement of my career? Dealing successfully with a number of bullies. Being voted clinical teacher of the year for 2 of the last 3 years of my career.
Lowest point in my life? A group of equally low points to do with not dealing with patients as well as I might have done.
Adjective that best describes career? Rewarding.
% of potential achieved? Don't know.
Most significant unfulfilled ambition? To reach my three score and ten - after which everything else is a bonus.
Level of optimism about medium-term future of the world? I am very apprehensive about our grandchildren's, or even our children's, prospects. Humankind perversely refuses to deal with a host of inexorably increasing global threats, any one of which, might be enough destroy humans as a species or at best obliterate all worthwhile human achievement. Taking a very long view of the development of life on earth, one might be comforted by the thought that human activity doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
Professional Life: Graduated MA, D Phil, BM BCh, Oxon 1970. Anaesthetic and Intensive Care training in the Anripodes 1972 - 77. Anaesthetic lecturer, Oxford, 1977-82. Senior Lecturer 1982 - 2004. Thereafter pursued true vocation - being retired: grandchildren, garden, amateur dramatics, theatrical and other painting, cider-making and testing, writing reams of doggerel, recreational cycling, other more cultural pursuits (pre-eminently birdwatching) as permitted and mandated by my wife.
Personal Life: Married to Somerville medical graduate since1968. Three daughters aged 42, 40 and 35, music teacher, clinical psychologist and actor, each married to a member of her respective profession. Steeling myself for down-sizing house and garden to allow more time for leisurely long distance cycling, National Trust volunteering etc.
