Alumni Day 2017 - Saturday 16 September
We look forward to welcoming our Old Members and their guests back to College on Saturday 16 September for a special programme of talks and a drinks reception, organised as part of the Oxford Alumni Weekend 2017.
Event Details
4.00pm – 4.45pm Late Summer Pimms Reception with George Cawkwell. Join George in the Fellows' Garden for a glass of Pimm's and a trip down memory lane as you share your memories of your time here at Univ.
4.45pm – 5.30pm An anecdotal history of Oxford University by Alastair Lack (1964). In this short and anecdotal talk, Alastair describes the origins of a poor and puny university that grew to be world famous, the growth of the colleges from Univ onwards, the finest collection of medieval buildings in England and recalls Oxonians, from Roger Bannister to Margaret Thatcher, ending with a look at the university today.
5.45pm – 6.30pm Getting teachers to come to school by Clare Leaver - Supernumerary Fellow, Associate Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government.
"Teacher absenteeism is a significant problem in many low-income countries, with close to 30% of teaching days lost across much of Saharan Africa. Dr Leaver will describe how employing simple, affordable mobile phone technology successfully incentivised teachers to come to school resulting in dramatic reduced pupil drop-out rate."
6.30pm – 7.30pm Drinks Reception hosted by the Master, Sir Ivor Crewe, in the Master’s Garden. Come and join the Master and Lady Crewe for sunshine and fizz in the Master's Garden. A chance to meet up with old friends and make a few new ones. We will raise a glass (or two) to toast the new academic year here at Univ.
