The Modern Languages Dinner

Saturday 17th March 2012

Current and former undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers and Fellows gathered for the Modern Languages Dinner in March 2012. Cloaked in the very thin guise of celebrating one of Univ’s most famous students (Prince Felix Yusupov) over 60 Old Members and guests met with the very solid aim of giving a fitting and memorable send-off to one of Univ’s most engaging and charismatic Dons, Mike Nicholson and his unstintingly supportive wife, Barbara.

Cheryl-Lisa Hearne (1991) reports: "We remembered with fondness and gratitude Barbara’s culinary feasts as we devoured the farewell zakuski, and we reminisced of fine times passed as we enjoyed once more Mike’s generous and abundant vodka. Mike declared how they were moved by how many people from every era of his teaching at Oxford kept in regular touch, and we were proud to be there that evening to mark the momentous occasion. Retirement sounds sweet, if exhausting, with so much travel in the last three months alone, Mike has not even touched the 60 boxes cleared from his old room – the return of our essays is still not imminent then!"
