The 2008 English & Arts Dinner

The English and Arts Dinner was held in College on the 26th September 2008, and was a very enjoyable occasion for those who attended. Prof Tiffany Stern (Beaverbrook and Bouverie Fellow in English) gave a pre-dinner talk entitled ‘Shakespeare on page and stage’ where she discussed Shakespeare’s plays from the perspective of actors between the sixteenth and the eighteenth century. She showed how due to the costs of paper and writing, actors were given only their own part to learn and the cues that they needed, with no indication of the parts in between. This had the effect of giving actors a different perspective of the plays and their respective parts than if the whole play was available for them to see.

Amanda BrookfieldPre-dinner drinks were held in the Hall before guests proceeded to the Alington room for dinner. Amanda Brookfield (1979) was our guest speaker; and gave an excellent speech after dinner about her career as a novelist and her time at Univ, which ended with a toast to the College. Drinks were held after dinner in the SCR where Stephen Cockburn (1959) made a toast to Emeritus Fellow Peter Bayley (1940), who was an undergraduate, a JRF and a Fellow in English at Univ between 1940 and 1972; and Rebecca Bullard (1998) made a toast to Emeritus Fellow Helen Cooper, Fellow in English at Univ between 1978 and 2004.
